In figures
What the numbers say.
Who rents here
One hundred households, lit.
39.6% rent privately
Of all households, Census 2021 (35.8% in 2011).
Each dot is one household in 100, so the lit dots are the published percentage rounded to a whole number. ONS, Census 2021 (opens in a new tab)
Squares and mansion blocks
Streets that were built to last.
The age of a building decides the approach to it, so the first thing we ask is what the surfaces are.
Much of Kensington and Chelsea was laid out in the 19th century, and the borough still looks like it. Thirty-eight conservation areas protect nearly three quarters of it, which means much of the borough is older, protected streets.
The terraces
The grand stucco terraces of South Kensington went up in stages. Queen's Gate began in 1855, with about 670 houses and 480 coach-houses, and the Edwardes estate had more than 1,200 buildings put up between 1867 and 1892. Houses and flats of that age often keep original features such as cornices, fireplaces and old floors, and those surfaces deserve the right products.
The mansion blocks
In the 1880s developers began building flats instead of houses. Albert Hall Mansions was begun in 1880, and by the end of that decade a lift was a selling point. A block of flats means shared entrances and stairs, and often a lift, so the first question for a clean is how the team gets in, and whether a lift or a porter is involved. Put that in the notes box and it goes into the plan.
Which clean for which home
A tenancy ending is an end of tenancy clean, matched to your check-in inventory. A home that needs a proper reset suits a deep clean, and a flat you let between guests suits changeover cleaning.
What it means
A period home deserves a clean that starts by asking what it is made of.
So we ask about floors, worktops and fittings before we bring a single product.
Portobello and Holland Park
Two places that shape the north of the borough.
Two local landmarks, and a note for anyone who lets a flat nearby.
Two places shape life in the north of the borough. Portobello Road market runs about 940 metres from Westbourne Grove to Golborne Road, and Saturday is the only day all five of its sections trade. The London Museum counts around 1,000 vendors across Portobello and Golborne Roads.
Holland Park covers 54 acres, by the council's figure. The Kyoto Garden was donated by the Kyoto Chamber of Commerce in 1991. Holland House, built in the early 1600s, was bombed in 1940, and its ruins now back Opera Holland Park.
If you let a flat here
A home in Greater London can be let for up to 90 nights in a calendar year without planning permission. That is a planning rule only, so your lease, mortgage and insurance may limit letting as well, and a national register for short lets is planned but not yet in force. For the changeover itself, the team works to a fixed checklist in the gap between check-out and check-in.
Parking and charges
The Ultra Low Emission Zone covers every London borough. The old Western Extension of the Congestion Charge, which covered part of west London, was removed in December 2010. Rules and boundaries change, so check an address on the TfL postcode checker.
